The Skeleton Key
Whether you're a devout sceptic or a hardcore goat-sacrificer, The Skeleton Key will keep you guessing until the final reel. More of a thriller than a horror, there's enough originality to satisfy most, though the whole experience is not quite what it should have been on paper.
The Skeleton Key is far, far better in every way than the movie it's being unfairly compared with, The Descent, yet somehow the quality elements can't quite come together to make a satisfying whole. Maybe it's Kate Hudson's lack of brilliance or Peter Sarsgaard's inappropriate sliminess, but I doubt it. From the aspects of The Skeleton Key that I liked, I should be giving it a solid 4, but it just doesn't feel like a 4. I guess you can wave all the voodoo feathers and draw all the talismans you want, but if the zombie doesn't rise from the grave then you're just a pavement artist with a poultry fetish. I enjoyed this film: I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: Kate sports some small tight outfits. To enjoy this film you should: let the movie take you along for the ride.

The Skelton Key. Apart from John Hurt who does a fantastic job of acting by using only his eyes and facial expressions the rest of the cast tend to leave you cold and wondering why you did not spend the evening watching the omnibus edition of Eastenders.

Kate Hudson stars as a hospice care worker assigned to John Hurt's bed-ridden stroke victim. Unable to communicate, he
still manages to convey a sense of foreboding and relies heavily on traditional New Orleans wife Gena Rowlands
for support and succour. Things are not as they seem in the Deep South, as the culture is steeped in hoodoo - not
voodoo, as they're careful to point out - and sure enough, da shit gets freekie when Hudson starts to use the
skeleton key to investigate the dusty ol' attic. Relying on real New Orleans
locations and with many keenly-shot scenes, The Skeleton Key walks the line between supernatural and paranoid without ever
letting us know which side of the line to bet on. Whilst some of the details are rather unlikely and perhaps a little
unnecessarily flamboyant, the story is unusually coherent and compelling, and the ending is magnificent. Although
it's not very scary as such, there are moments that make you tingle, and the jumps are (mostly) provided genuinely by the
suspense and visuals, rather than sudden loud noises. All in all, British director Iain Softley has done a fine job,
as you would expect from the man who made the underrated K-Pax.
Kate Hudson is fine in the lead role, but shows little of her mum Goldie Hawn's unique spark, choosing to tread the more
orthodox path and thus becoming all but indistinguishable from the myriad of other competent cute actresses.
Gena Rowlands, who has
apparently been in 50 or so movies, none of which I've seen, is great as the seasoned protective wife, looking like
she's lived in the big house sweeping the floors and making jambalaya all her life. John Hurt's script-challenging
performance as the mute stroke victim is masterful considering the limitations of his character, whereas I felt Peter
Sarsgaard (
