2020 Forwardcharm Fantasy F1 Rules

Welcome to the 2020 Forwardcharm Fantasy F1 championship.

The rules for 2020 are exactly the same as they were for 2019, so if you played last year you don't need to bother with this page!

The idea is simple. Pick a team, change it as many times as you like throughout the year and score points when your selections do well in the real Formula One Championship. The game is just for fun, it costs nothing to enter and you can enter multiple teams if you like. There are no prizes for Fantasy F1, it really is just a bit of fun.

To enter, simply create your team from the link above. There is no "team budget", so you can chop and change as many times as you like for no penalty, except during a race weekend. Each selection has a weighting, decided by me and is likely to change during the season if they do better or worse than expected. The selection's score is multiplied by its weighting at the start of the race, thus giving the less orthodox selections more chance to contribute to your team's score. For example, Lewis Hamilton may have a weighting of 1 as he is likely to score lots. Antonio Giovinazzi, however, may be less likely to do well and so his weighting may be 14, meaning he scores fourteen times as much as Hamilton does. The effect of this weighting is to level the playing field - you won't win if you play safe with the big boys, you'll only make it to the top if you can predict the underdogs' success.

You'll notice the weightings of the lower drivers are enormous, to encourage more people to pick them. Thus, if Nicholas Lafiti scores a single point for finishing tenth and Hamilton wins the race, you'll probably score more for picking Lafiti because of his huge weighting.

The weighting of any selection will only ever change while the site is locked during a race. This means that once you pick a driver, you can be confident that his weighting won't change before the start of the next race. In practice, the weightings rarely change after the first two or three races.

Scoring

Your team consists of three drivers and one car - that's all. Scoring is calculated at the end of each race weekend according to the results listed on www.f1.com. In the real F1 championships, points are awarded in accordance with the FIA standard:

  • 25 points for 1st place,
  • 18 points for 2nd place,
  • 15 points for 3rd place,
  • 12 points for 4th place,
  • 10 points for 5th place,
  • 8 points for 6th place,
  • 6 points for 7th place,
  • 4 points for 8th place,
  • 2 points for 9th place,
  • 1 point for 10th place.
  • In the Forwardcharm Fantasy F1, points are awarded as follows.

  • Each driver scores DOUBLE championship points for his final placing.
  • Each driver scores SINGLE championship points for his starting grid position (i.e. after any grid penalty is applied) as listed on f1.com (e.g. if he starts from pole, he gets 25 points, if he starts from tenth, he gets 1 point).
  • Each driver that finishes gets an extra 1 point. The last driver to get the finish bonus is the lowest classified driver who crosses the line to take the chequered flag. Anyone classified ahead of this driver gets the finishing bonus even if he himself crashed on his last lap. ("Classified" refers to the finishing order listed on f1.com)
  • Fastest lap is worth another 10 points.
  • Your car generates points from both drivers in that team. The unweighted score for your car is the average of the unweighted scores of the two drivers in that F1 team.
  • ALL points are multiplied by that selection's weighting, as described above. The effect of the weighting is that crap drivers and cars score more if they do well.
  • Notes

There are some other points to bear in mind:

  • No team changes will be allowed once the race weekend starts. The site is automatically locked down at midnight GMT on the night of the Friday before the race and is generally opened again on the Sunday immediately following the race (though occasionally this is delayed until Monday for exceptional reasons, such as me being away).
  • If your selection doesn't take part in the race for any reason, they don't score any points. If they are replaced then you get the replacement in your team instead. If your driver moves to another team without a break, you stick with that driver.
  • With the FIA's penchant for deciding race results weeks after an event has finished, we have to draw the line somewhere. If the results change by the end of the day of the race, I'll update the scores, but not if they change after that. Of course, if it turns out that I've made a mistake (perish the thought) then I'll correct the scores at any time.
  • Privacy

This site is not secure. Your password will be transmitted over the internet in plain-text and so could potentially be read by dodgy Nigerians. For this reason, it is advisable not to use a password that you use elsewhere. If you forget your password, simply use the password reset mechanism on the login page.

The personal details you enter (name, email address and password) will be used solely for the running of the Forwardcharm Fantasy F1 site and will not be used or distributed for any other purpose.

    Have fun!

That's all. I hope you enjoy playing Forwardcharm Fantasy F1.
