The Holiday

The Holiday

Cast: Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, Jack Black, Eli Wallach, Edward Burns, Rufus Sewell.

Directed by Nancy Meyers.

Story: Holiday swappers find romance.

Running Time: 2hrs 18 minutes.

UK Certificate 12A.

Well, it's a bit trashy, but for all that, The Holiday is actually pretty good.

Jude questions Cameron's choice of slipper on such a cold day. Cameron says it was an icy pun. Two love stories for the price of one! Cameron Diaz's involves Jude Law when she and Kate Winslet swap homes for the Christmas period and Kate's half of the story introduces Jack Black to charm - who'd have thought he could pull that off? He doesn't turn the comedy off completely, and it's all the better for it. None of the humour is laugh-out-loud funny, but there's plenty here and there to make you smile. Diaz and Law are clearly the showpiece couple, and really I'd have liked to see more of Winslet and Black, but judging from the audience's coos at Jude Law coping with kids, I'm in the minority there. Kate Winslet's side story with aged Hollywood veteran Eli Wallach was more touching for me, but then I'm not the broody type.

Kate Winslet and Jack Black, at my place while I was out watching them at the cinema. Spooky. Director Nancy Meyers is pretty good at the chick-flick, with Something's Gotta Give and What Women Want both going down well in a popcorn-and-forget kind of way, and The Holiday continues the trend. There's very little to remember this time next year, and there's no emotional depth whatsoever (even less so than in her previous movies), but it's all good harmless fun and will be enjoyed by both sides of any couple, even though they might not want to admit it. It's perhaps a touch lardy - there's plenty that could have been trimmed - but that's a minor criticism.

The Holiday is definitely aimed at the ladies, but has enough warmth and light humour to keep the fellas entertained as well. Don't expect a classic, just sit back with some ice cream and let the tosh wash over you, like a cerebral Holiday.

I enjoyed this film: 3/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 4/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 0/5 - nothing to see here.

To enjoy this film you should: not think too hard.

The Holiday was released in the UK on 8th December.
