Lucky Number Slevin
Lucky Number Slevin is a cool, stylish New York underworld movie with enough plot to make your spoon stand up in it. Pay attention as the story gains freight-train speed and you will be rewarded.
Lucky Number Slevin comes highly recommended, but at a price. You need to be prepared to work with it, think with it and move on when it wants you to, or you'll be left sitting on the platform wondering where the train went. Put in the effort and you'll be repaid with a classy, stylish movie with enough plot to leave a soap scriptwriter gibbering in the gutter. I enjoyed this film: I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: - gangster killings, one quick flash of nudity. To enjoy this film you should be: watching carefully.

I have never walked out of a cinema part-way through the film, but I seriously considered it, more than once, with this film. I went to see it on the premise of some good established actors – Willis, Kingsley (oops, sorry Ben, that's SIR Ben Kingsley – he's very particular about it) and Freeman. All three were hopelessly under-used. Willis, the most utilised, did himself no favours by reverting to the minimalist acting of his yesteryears. I also soon got fed up with Lucy Liu's c*ck-teasing antics.

Gangster movies have to be cool to succeed - it's a path well trodden and well enjoyed. With Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman
and the deliciously venomous Ben Kingsley on board, Lucky Number Slevin is off to a flyer. A warm welcome to Ben Kingsley,
rejuvenating his old nutter character from Sexy Beast - why isn't he in more of these movies? The follically-challenged
headcase goes tęte-a-tęte (shiny vs ashy) with Morgan Freeman, who leaves his teddy bear suit in the dressing room for a
change and tries on the coat of crime. It suits him - though he still looks like he's going to pull a fifty pee from
behind your ear. Under the cosh of these two heavyweight lunatics is fresh-faced Josh Hartnett, mysteriously unfazed
considering the jam he finds himself in - mistaken for a gambler owing tons of cash to these murderous bosses and with no
way to pay it back. This is how the story starts - but it has more twists and turns than a lap of Monte Carlo so you'd
better be on your toes or you'll get lost and drive into the swimming pool before you've got your seatbelt on.
Even if you do find yourself in the deep end without your water wings (use the airbag), the groove of the movie will
hold your interest. By piling on the style, the viewer is
subconsciously told to take it with a pinch of salt, so although we make the effort to think through the story, we're not
too bothered by little details that we can't reconcile. Scottish director Paul McGuigan hasn't done much before, but
among his scant credits is Gangster No. 1 - let's hope that there's more in this vein to come from him, as he clearly
has a talent for it.
