King Kong (2005)
Peter Jackson, hot on the heels of his Lord of the Rings successes, takes on the might of the 1933 epic King Kong. Except being Peter Jackson, he's made it over THREE FECKING HOURS! STOP DOING THAT!
King Kong is a mindless action thriller with a soft centre. Enjoy the thrills and spills and you'll find it the best of breed, just don't expect any depth beyond the original's girl-gorilla story. Take it with a pinch of banana and you won't be able to take your eyes off the screen. I enjoyed this film: I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: - Plenty of simian action, fairly violent in places - the body count's pretty high. To enjoy this film you should: arrive an hour after the billed start time (there were 25 minutes of crap before the movie even started and the first half hour is just filler).

It wouldn't be so bad if the first hour wasn't so dull and drawn out. By the time The Hairy One shows up, we're usually
towards the summing up phase in a non-Jackson movie and so we're already losing focus when the action starts. Fortunately,
the action is intense enough to wake even the most narcoleptic viewer, with one particularly daft but riveting sequence
involving a series of hair-raising encounters with increasingly large dinosaurs. All the action relies on the usual
Hollywood formula - impossibly near misses followed by almost-escapes before being launched back into the fire again, so
much so that it only takes a couple of scenes before the audience gives up on the will-they-survive mentality and just lets
the beautifully constructed hokum wash over them.
Normally I'm treading carefully around the plot, trying not to give anything away, but it doesn't matter here as you all
know it already. It's a great story, but you really need to avoid thinking about the details. Why were they so keen to
bring back the big ape when the island was full of dinosaurs? Are we really supposed to believe Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot)
can shoot a fleet of giant insects off his mates by waving the gun around with his eyes closed? Why does everyone
stand and stare when anyone with half a brain would be legging it? It's that kind of movie - like a cross between Titanic
and Jurassic Park - very high on the action ride stakes once it gets going, but very low on the plausibility.
Surprisingly, the best aspect of the story is the
burgeoning relationship between Kong and Naomi Watts, which is genuinely touching in places and very effectively handled.
This is helped immeasurably by the realistic portrayal of Kong himself by Gollum Andy Serkis (who also appears as the ship's
cook). Kong's movements are very gorilla-like and his screen presence is utterly convincing thanks to some superb CGI.
Speaking of the CGI, most of it is incredible - the scenes on top of the Empire State Building, looking down on 1930s
Manhattan, are exquisite and more than a little vertiginous - but even here some of the planes look very wobbly and are
clearly not part of the same image.
Similarly, when Kong holds anyone in his hand, it looks like a Barbie doll, which is peculiar when some other scenes, such
as the guy getting eaten by a pink slobbery wormy thing and the dino-Kong scraps, look so good. The music's a tad too
ear-splitting and overpowering at times, too. Acting-wise, Naomi Watts (The Ring, Mulholland Drive) makes a fine Fay Wray
and Jack Black (School of Rock, High Fidelity), though not my first choice, makes an interestingly
different scumbag film-maker Carl Denham. But none of that matters, because we're not looking at the actors. Kong is King.
