Imaginary Heroes
Imaginary Heroes is no American Beauty. It feels like it's trying to be, but oh dear and oh no, American Beauty got the balance between dark and darkly funny just right. Imaginary Heroes is just dark.
The story is an altogether heavy one, sensitively told. There are attempts at humour, but they're few and far between and are not funny, just mildly amusing. The film is very real in this respect, nothing feels contrived or choreographed - things happen and the characters deal with them. Whereas in most films you know when a critical plot thread is about to be revealed because of the musical cues and a build-up in dramatic tension, there is no such mechanism here, so the viewer is as surprised as the characters. The movie will be criticised for this, but I liked that approach - it feels more real and credits the viewer with the intelligence to spot what's just emerged without being force-fed like a battery chicken. Bwak.
Imaginary Heroes is a very impressive achievement. It's a very well told story with complex and evolving characters. It's not really a film you can enjoy, because the subject matter can be onerous and perhaps a little close to the bone for some, so you may end up feeling grim afterwards, but there's no doubt in my mind that it's a quality movie. See it if you're in a sombre, reflective mood already. I enjoyed this film: I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: Some recreational drug usage and lots of emotional turmoil. The 18 certificate is a tad harsh, I would have given it a 15. To enjoy this film you should be: ready to have your buzz killed.

The movie opens with the introduction of the family, centred around son number one (Kip Pardue), a swimmer expected to
make the Olympic team. Parents Sigourney Weaver and particularly Jeff Daniels put all their energy into the swimming son,
leaving son number two (Emile Hirsch from 
Performances throughout are excellent and appropriate, with Sigourney Weaver particularly noteworthy as the complex,
caring but burdened mother. The feeling of a family unable to deal with their issues is created fully and skilfully,
which is particularly impressive considering the director and writer Dan Harris is only 25. In fact, the whole film
is created in such a real way that it belies the director's youth and sets a lesson that other more mainstream directors
could learn. However, the very fact that the mood is one of realism makes for a singular lack of a sense of drama,
which is no bad thing per se, but with the moviegoing audience weaned on crescendoes and lightning flashes accompanying
anything of significance, many viewers will fail to register the salient points. It's a shame, but it's true. The movie's
strength is what will make it fail, because of a conditioned audience.
