Green Street (a.k.a. Hooligans)

Green Street

Cast: Elijah Wood, Charlie Hunnam, Marc Warren, Claire Forlani, Geoff Bell, Leo Gregory.

Directed by Lexi Alexander.

Story: West Ham football hooligans find a new recruit.

Running Time: 1hr 49 minutes.

Certificate 18.

Green Street, known as Hooligans in the US, is all about football hooliganism - but don't let that put you off. I couldn't give a toss about football or fighting, but Green Street easily held my interest and is heartily recommendable to anyone who doesn't mind an unhealthy dose of swearing and violence.

Rafe Spall and Charlie Hunnam, looking for streakers. Elijah Wood, of Frodo fame, plays a Harvard student visiting his family in good ol' Blighty. Family member Charlie Hunnam is leader of the Green Street Elite, the West Ham "firm" responsible for beating the crap out of other teams' firms. We're shown the mindless thuggery, with plenty of ketchup, and we're also shown the everyday lives and loves of the main protagonists. These two opposites are presented with such skill that it creates a compelling whole that will be of interest to anyone who likes a helping of grittiness in their movies. I have no doubt that Green Street will be criticised by the ever-present troupe of whingeing monkeys for "glamourising" mindless violence - but that's not even slightly true. The violence is depicted very graphically, but in no way could it be described as glamorous. We're left in absolutely no doubt that we clearly want no part of this life, thanks to the brave writing and brilliantly appropriate soundtrack, which extends to some great Stone Roses tracks during the matey moments.

Elijah Wood, wishing he was in Mordor. Elijah Wood turns in a good performance as the naive yank, visibly growing in stature and confidence as he fits into the group. Main players Charlie Hunnam and Leo Gregory make a good stab at the lead firm roles, but they try a little too hard and come across a little pantomimey in places. This is particularly noticeable at the beginning, with Hunnam explaining to Frodo how the whole business works - it's all a little too "I am a hard nut really, honest" for my liking, deliberating over the details ponderously to make sure that the viewing Americans get it. The best performances are from the less significant members of the firm - Dave and Swill - played by unknowns Ross McCall and Rafe Spall; they manage to capture the British matey culture far better than their colleagues. Geoff Bell picks up the award for best supporting headcase, building on his success in the recent British movie The Business. Under the direction of female German director Lexi Alexander, the cast gel exceptionally well together and lend massive credibility to the basic but genuine story.

Green Street has done the impossible - turning football hooliganism into a thought-provoking and entertaining movie, without resorting to preaching or tackiness. Set aside your preconceptions and give it a bash, you might be surprised.

I enjoyed this film: 4/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 4/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 4/5 Copious swearing and violence.

To enjoy this film you should: put aside any preconceptions about hooligans.

Green Street is on general release in the UK now.
